As we move into the month of Elul (on the Hebrew calendar) we move into the fall holiday season. The word Elul in Hebrew meansto search or to search out”. The fall feasts are a time on introspection, of searching out one’s heart. But for some the fall feasts become more difficult than for others.

Not because their heart is more wicked than someone else’s but because of the added expenses of the holiday, save Yom Kippur. All the biblical feast include food, there joyful time spent with friends and family, again except Yom Kippur which is a day of fasting.

Unfortunately, the added expenses of the holiday cast a dark shadow for those we help. When you can’t make ends meet and you always have more month than pay check, to provide the things that will make the holidays special become a burden. Last year one of the people we help said “I hate the holidays” when I asked him why he said “because I can’t afford them” and that should not be; it should be a time of rejoicing with loved ones.

I am not familiar with all the holiday where you may live, but what if you didn’t have the money to buy the things that make your holidays special? I have personally experienced that in my life and I am sure some of you have too. Now to that add fifteen years of terrorist attack and the constant fear of living just kilometers away from a group of people that want to wipe you off the face of the map and are digging terrorist tunnels across the border, aiming for your child’s school playground as you read this.

School starts the first week of September and Rosh Hashanah is on the 13 of September this year, adding even a bigger burden to those we help. The holidays are supposed to be a joyful time but for many in Sderot it will be just one more burden on their plate, but you can help change that. Would you consider sending a gift today? Would you consider sending this newsletter to those on your mailing list? I know not everyone is able to give but maybe someone on your mailing list is able to give but they just don’t know there is a need here in Sderot.

We could really use your help. We don’t have a lot of time to make preparation for next month so please press the “forward” button and please click here to help today. Thank you in advance.
